THE KITCHEN BOULDER

Helping Hands Wherever Needed: Dish, Prep, Pantry, Grill, Saute, Expo, Etc.

June 2021 - Febuary 2023: Boulder, CO

FOUNDED BY KIMBAL MUSK AND HUGO MATHESON IN 2004, WITH THE INTENT TO RECONNECT WITH OUR ROOTS BY CULTIVATING AND COOKING "REAL FOOD."

I entered The Kitchen as a guest, ordered a bowl of crab fried rice, and happened to hear the manager describing to the table next to mine just how difficult it had been during Covid to keep things going. I decided in that moment to offer a helping hand. I got right to work peeling potatoes and washing dishes, making myself useful in whatever was asked of me. And then something quite powerful happened, I fell in love with cooking food.

Nearly two years later, I've helped us break near half a dozen all-time sales records. I've worked Pantry, Grill, Sauté, and Expo. I've plated a quiche for Massimo Bottura. I've helped to train every staff member we have in back of house aside from our sous chefs, Alex, and Nick. Jason (General Manager) introduces me to new hires as the kindest most positive guy he's ever met. Sam (CFO) says that I make the best Roman Salads he's ever eaten. Chef Aaron (Executive Sous) says my plates are immaculate, but I could use some work on speed. I won "Cream of the Crop" during q4 of 2021. And I helped Kimbal and Hugo sell off the Next Door franchise through my cooking on the line the evening that deal took place. I met Elon after we'd cooked for him while celebrating Kimbal's 50th, and as much as I wanted to share my work in Ponix and Nomad with him and Kimbal as they thanked us for our work that evening, I refrained from doing so out of respect for The Kitchen.

During the month of February 2023, I decided to pause my work in The Kitchen. The pressure on the line is unlike anything I've ever experienced. We had a full staff again, and my input was not as critical as it had been during the peak of Covid. I'm happy to have helped us survive, grow, and thrive through such difficult circumstances. I have nothing but the utmost respect for my chefs and colleagues; Grateful for all I've learned, and proud to have served the Boulder community through our work together.

NM Falcons LLC.

Ranch Manager

September 2019 – June 2021: Los Lunas, NM

NM FALCONS LLC IS ONE OF THE LARGEST CAPTIVE-BRED FALCON RANCHES ON EARTH, SPECIALIZING IN GYR, SAKER, AND PEREGRINE FALCONS.

Responsible for day-to-day operations of the falcon ranch. Including but not limited to training breeding birds and new fledglings using traditional falconry practices along with modern techniques. Exercise routines for the birds were typically conducted using drones which had been modified to carry a lure attached to a parachute canister hanging from underneath the vehicle. As the drone climbs upwards to roughly 1,000ft, the falcon follows just behind in figure-eight motions climbing higher and higher until the drone is slowed down to allow the bird to snatch the lure from out underneath the aircraft, at which point the parachute is deployed to gently slow the bird’s descent. From cleaning chambers to feeding freshly hatched eyasses, to fixing sprinklers and mending fences, I took a lot of pride in caring for the ranch. I got involved with every aspect of captive breeding. My primary motivation for working at the facility was to better understand the Gyr Falcon, the polar bear of the skies. This arctic bird lives in regions prone to the long-term implications of climate change. In my mentor Frank Bond’s footsteps I began to establish The Gyr Fund, modeled after Frank’s work in creating The Peregrine Fund. What I came to understand during my time working with Gyrfalcons at the ranch is that they have a dark morph embedded in their genetics. Even if their environment melts, I’m confident that they will survive by changing shades to blend in. And while their numbers are stable at the moment, I will continue my work in establishing The Gyr Fund to continue conducting research on their behalf in efforts to preserve the species indefinitely.

AUXYGEN CREATIVE LLC.

Co-Founder & CEO

May 2013 – January 2014: Syracuse, NY

AUXYGEN WAS A CREATIVE DESIGN CONSULTANCY

Co-Founded the creative studio during the summer of my senior year at Syracuse University. With five co-founders, we generated nearly $150,000 in revenue during our first six months of operations. What started in the attic of our fraternity house quickly grew into a 3,000sqft facility in downtown Syracuse with a team of nearly a dozen. Our collective comprised of fellow students studying industrial design, architecture, computer science, photography, cinematography, videography, fine art, communications, civil and mechanical engineering. Notable Clientele included Jay Bonner & Jean Marc Castera (Design of Palace for His Majesty Qaboos bin Said Al Said of Oman), Hilton Doubletree at Orland Seaworld, Gensler, Highlander Corp, Syracuse University, Carl Schramm, James Biber & Edward Jung (U.S. Pavilion Expo Milano 2015), and other small businesses in the North Eastern US. Ponix and Nomad were birthed from this experience, and AUXYGEN was closed down as our core team packed up onto the Blackbird Bus and headed out west.

Bonner Design Consultancy

Website Development and Architectural Renderings

May 2013 – Present: Syracuse, NY, & Santa Fe, NM

Jay Bonner is the man responsible for teaching me how to use Rhino. He introduced me to it back in 2007, and I’ve been using it ever since. So when he asked me to help him out with a project for the Sultan of Oman, I leaped at the opportunity. This was the project that brought my peers at Syracuse together and ultimately led to our forming of AUXYGEN Creative. Jay would send us a whole bunch of individual 3D components and 2D designs that we then spent months piecing together into a final master model which we rendered using KeyShot. We then went on to build Jays website, which I’ve rebuilt again since. I also contributed a set of renderings for his book, “Islamic Geometric Patterns: Their Historical Development and Traditional Methods of Construction,” with a foreword by Sir Roger Penrose.

Theta Chi Fraternity

Vice President, CoRush Chair, & CoSocial Chair of The Alpa Chi Chapter at Syracuse University

October 2012 – January 2014: Syracuse, NY

During the summer of 2013 I lead a large effort with the alumni board to invest nearly $60,000 towards renovations for the fraternity house, dedicating my summer to collaboratively oversee and partake in the work. We stripped out two floors of carpet and restored the original hardwood floors. We gutted and rebuilt all the bathrooms. And finished the summer by repainting all of the exterior trim and adding an enormous crest to the side of the house. In exchange for our contributions (lots of free labor) we were granted use of the attic and part of the basement to establish AUXYGEN.

Baron BIOFUELS

Founder and Self Taught Engineer

May 2012 – March 2016: Syracuse, NY

Given the distance between Santa Fe, NM and Syracuse, NY, I decided to take some of the proceeds from my laser-cutting operation and invested in a used 1999 Ford F350 diesel ambulance which I converted to run on Waste Vegetable Oil. My first conversion was quite crude, but it worked… It only took me two weeks to figure it out on the road as I broke down every 50 miles on my way back to Santa Fe that first time around. After working out the kinks and truly understanding the principles of the system, I managed to drive it back and forth to school every summer while studying architecture at Syracuse. I’d stop into restaurants along the way and ask if I could purchase some of their waste fryer oil. Usually, they’d laugh at me and offer it for free. I developed an onboard filtration system that stripped out all the particulates in the waste oil, along with a rather crude yet sophisticated heating system that utilized the hot engine coolant to get the oil flowing at the same viscosity as diesel. Being able to schlep my architecture models and tools with me made it all worthwhile. I saved thousands on transportation costs over the years this way. We called the ambulance conversion El Toro, and that little van became the first prototype for Nomad. When we were looking for a way to move out to Palo Alto a few years later in order to raise capital for Ponix, I engineered a much larger system for the Blackbird Bus. This time around, the system worked perfectly first try. We never had any issues with it. And while living aboard, parked on Stanford’s El Camino sidewalk, the vision for Nomad took shape.

EV ONE LLC

Co-Founder and Architectural Designer

November 2011 – May 2013: Syracuse, NY

With the proceeds generated from my laser-cutting operation, I purchased a small piece of land at 201 Allen St. and was granted a variance to build a tiny house onsite. My Turkish friend from Architecture school wanted to get involved, so we formed an LLC called Ev One (ev is Turkish for house). With the addition of a third friend from the architecture program, we began to apply for tax-delinquent properties surrounding the university area in an effort to build multi-unit residential structures designed specifically for architecture students at SU to live in. With the rapid success of Auxygen, I had to resign from my role in the company, but both my colleagues continued on. Kaan Sanalan moved into real estate in NYC, while Ryan DeSilva started up a new business based on our model called DC Capital Partners. 201 Allen St. currently serves host to our very first Ponix prototype.

Syracuse University Lasercutting Services

Founder & Operator

August 2011 – January 2014: Syracuse, NY

INDEPENDENT LASER CUTTING SERVICES FOR SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

I purchased my first Laser Cutting machine at the end of my freshman year after observing a large and unmet demand for digital fabrication services at Syracuse University, particularly within the School of Architecture. I put my life savings into purchasing a 60W, 2’x3’ cut bed, 300lb machine off of Alibaba, opened up a dig-fab center in the basement of my fraternity house, and business took off. The machine paid for itself three or four times over, and I was able to employ my friends for $30/hr to work night shifts during busy midterms and finals. Best of all, I didn’t have to wait two weeks to get my files cut. My model-making abilities leveled up a few notches in the process.

Aerblock LLC

Helping Hands Wherever and Whenever Needed

2001 – Present: Santa Fe, NM

Aerblock is my father’s company, specializing in Aerated Autoclaved Concrete. During my early years, I helped him out on the job site all the time. I learned how to operate a scope, set string lines, dig foundations, lay rebar, erect form work, pour footers, cast slabs, mix mortar, and then brick by brick, we built the walls. My father is a master craftsman, so installing windows, spanning headers, fabricating steps, and setting joists was just as natural for him. I soaked it all up, and when I got older, he let me operate the forklifts, cranes, bandsaws, and other heavy duty equipment. As the internet emerged, I helped him program his website. With the skills I learned at architecture school, I’ve been able to do a lot of renderings for his prospective clients. And as I began to understand the fundamentals of programming and hardware integration, I helped him piece together his own machinery to produce lightweight concrete. I’m so proud of his latest creation: A cellular lightweight concrete microfactory. I watched him try to get $20M German factories developed in the US for nearly 20 years, but the lumber industry here is so heavily subsidized, and the workforce is so tuned into building with stickframe, it seamed impossible to make any progress. Yet, he persevered and figured out how to make his own miniature factory for a fraction of the cost. I’ve helped him here and there as much as I could the last few years, and I’m excited to see the machine come to life. We should be able to start churning out some block and panels this summer. I wish I could share photos of this latest creation, but first, we need to secure some patents.
